Alto facilities

The Department of Applied Mechanics at Aalto University has large experimental facilities for model testing and structural testing. The model testing facilities include a towing tank and a multipurpose basin for open water and ice model tests. Both tanks are equipped with wave makers. The tanks are mainly used in studies involving hydrodynamics, safety and structure-to-ice interaction problems of ships and offshore structures. A capability unique in the world is maneuvering circle testing in ice. The facilities are supplemented with state-of-the-art measurement equipment such as 3D Particle Image Velocimetry system for flow field measurement and an optical system for motion measurements. The structural testing facilities can be tailored for various types of problems including static and dynamic tests. The facilities are used extensively in teaching ranging from course work to Master's and Doctoral thesis related studies.
